About Us
Stable, affordable housing is a key determinant of health. The house and neighborhood where one grows up impacts the health and longevity of one’s life. Having a safe, stable, affordable home also impacts a child’s success in school. However, many Gloucester County residents live outside a safe, stable neighborhood as roughly 10% of the county residents live below the poverty line.
That is why Gloucester County Habitat has been at work in since 1986, building houses in partnership with those in need of affordable housing. In 34 years, our organization completed 47 homes for low-income families, providing affordable housing to more than 225 family members.
Homeownership is a crucial foundation for any family. By moving out of substandard housing and into a Habitat home, homeowners and their families become more likely to improve their health, attain an education, and increase their safety and personal wealth. According to a study by Habitat for Humanity International, 74% of Habitat homeowners stated that their families’ health had improved since moving into their homes. Prior to moving, poor living conditions proved detrimental to mental health and aggravated existing medical conditions, such as asthma.
